The Active Wellbeing Society

The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS) is a community benefit society and cooperative based in Birmingham. Initially established in 2015 as part of Birmingham City Council’s Wellbeing Service, its aim is to help build healthy, happy communities that live active and connected lives.

The requirement

TAWS launched its hugely successful #BrumTogether campaign at the start of Covid-19. The initiative was delivered in conjunction with more than 60 other organisations, made up of aid organisations, voluntary and faith groups from across Birmingham. The coalition’s main aim was to provide individuals, families and vulnerable residents with much-needed support and supplies throughout the pandemic.

Word about the campaign needed to be communicated far and wide across the city ASAP, so TAWS turned to SK Copy Co to provide interim public relations support.

The solution

SK Copy Co was brought on to manage the entire #BrumTogether public relations campaign throughout the first summer of the Covid pandemic, when supplies of food and essential items, such as clothing and toiletries, were increasingly difficult to get hold of.

We were essentially a full-time member of TAWS’ marketing team, taking part in daily update meetings and multiple campaign theme meetings throughout the week. We advised on the activity that was most likely to generate media coverage, and produced and pitched a constant stream of press releases that generated countless pieces of online, print and broadcast coverage across the Midlands.

Our work also involved liaising with key partners, including Birmingham City Council and the numerous coalition organisations to produce multi-agency updates, and dealing with daily media enquiries. Media relations aside, we also tapped into our wider content marketing insight to repurpose press releases into web stories, produce social media posts and marketing collateral and generate a regular stream of new content ideas.

The results

Every single Midlands media outlet ran stories about #BrumTogether throughout the entire summer of 2020 and promoted the campaign across social. In the space of just a matter of months, more than 60 pieces of coverage were generated, with #BrumTogether being covered by the likes of BBC News Online, Midlands Today, Birmingham Live, BBC Radio WM and Free Radio on multiple occasions.

This is what TAWS’ Marketing Manager has to say about the support we provided:

SK Copy Co supported our #BrumTogether campaign during a really busy and uncertain period.

“What really stood out was Sanina’s ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining high standards. She produced multiple press releases, blog articles and digital copy at the same time as dealing with press enquiries.

She was very proactive and often picked up general wider marketing tasks and provided much-needed guidance to some of the junior members of the team.
